The front
page of the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport featured a curious image
of
Novak Djokovic crowning
Jannik Sinner after his defeat in the 2023 ATP
Finals.
Jannik
Sinner's astonishing performance in Turin on Tuesday night solidified itself as
a historic moment as he defeated Novak Djokovic, who entered the match with an
impressive streak of 19 victories.
This epic
triumph, sealed with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-7 (5), and 7-6 (2) in an thrilling
3-hour and 9-minute clash, marked a significant milestone. It was the first
time in four encounters that Sinner overcame the formidable Djokovic, whose
last defeat dated back to the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic
himself had words of praise for the Italian young star.
“You have
to just congratulate him. He just played a fantastic match. That’s what I told
him at the net. I think in the most important moments, he played his best game
and he absolutely deserved to win,” Djokovic said.
"I
think I was really brave and intelligent in important moments, especially the
third set. I felt like we were both serving really well so there were not so
many exchanges, but when the exchanges were played we both played really well,”
Sinner said after match.
Today, the
newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport published a curious illustration depicting
the 24-times Grand Slam champion "crowning" Jannik Sinner:
“Can always
trust La Gazzetta dello Sport not to overreact lmao,” some user wrote on X (former Twitter):
Despite his
two victories in the tournament, Sinner is not yet qualified for the
semifinals, as he needed to win in two sets to not depend on the result of the
last match. His next challenge will be facing Holger Rune in the Green Group, and
a victory could secure him the first position in his group.
