Jannik
Sinner overcame a resilient
Holger Rune with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, securing
his spot in the
ATP Finals semifinals as the group leader.
The
22-year-old Italian had already guaranteed his advancement to the ATP Finals semifinals
after victories in his first two matches against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak
Djokovic. Following Djokovic's three-set win over Hubert Hurkacz in the day's
first match, Sinner's passage to the semifinals was solidified even before he
took the court.
On the
other side, Holger Rune had the chance to secure a semifinal berth with a
victory, and he held the key to whether Djokovic would advance to the
semifinals or be eliminated in the round-robin tournament.
In the
first set, Sinner replicated the same level he had shown in his previous
matches, quickly gaining a 4-0 advantage with two breaks against an inaccurate
Rune. Although the Danish player improved his service and managed to win some
games, the Italian was unyielding on his serve, claiming the first set 6-2 in
just 33 minutes.
Sinner's
dominance in the first set waned in the early part of the second set, and Rune
began to excel in his returns. In fact, the 20-year-old Dane had the first
break opportunity in the fifth game, but couldn't capitalize, just like Sinner
who missed his break chance in the subsequent game.
With the
score 6-5 in favor of Rune, a tie-break seemed inevitable, but Sinner faced
irregularities in his service game, falling behind 0-40 and conceding the game
and set on Rune's third opportunity, reigniting his hopes of reaching the
semifinals.
With the
score level, the most exciting moments of the match unfolded, with several
lengthy games played until 4-4. Both players had opportunities to secure the
break that would give them the victory, but it was Sinner who performed better
in crucial points. He secured a break in the ninth game and ultimately closed
out the match with his serve at 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
This result
positions
Jannik Sinner as the group leader with three victories, and it also
allowed Novak Djokovic to advance in the second spot of the group. Both players
now await the outcome of the second group, where Daniil Medvedev has a
guaranteed spot, and Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev could claim the second
spot, although their final positions are yet to be determined.
