Carlos Alcaraz is undoubtedly the ATP breakout star of the year with the young Spaniard achieving some amazing things in 2021.
Chief among them is climbing through the rankings thanks to his stellar play from the beginning of the year till the end. His 2021 began with some amazing games in Australia where he was able to play at the Australian Open. He then continued his excellent performances through the clay season considering that is a surface on which he grew up on.
His tremendous play continued throughout the season as he was able to win is maiden ATP trophy as well as win the ATP Next Gen Finals to end the year. All of that allowed Alcaraz to climb 109 spots during the calendar year which is something nobody on the ATP tour did this year. On the WTA it was Raducanu who had an even bigger breakout but both of them will be stars of the next generation of great tennis players.
Alcaraz climbed from number 141 to number 32 which is his year-end ranking for the 2021 season and by doing that Alcaraz is currently the youngest player in the top 100. He also became the youngest top 100 player since Andrey Medvedev did it in 1992 at age 18. He will end his year at the Davis Cup Finals representing Spain.
