Spain’s young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz will have a great opportunity
to close the gap on the world number one Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic in the
Australian Open.
The 20-year-old is often regarded as one of the most
highly-rated youngsters currently playing in the men’s singles category along
with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and America’s Ben Shelton.
Alcaraz currently sits in the second position in the ATP Ranking
with 8,855 rating points. On the other hand, Djokovic currently sits on the
top of the ladder with 11,145 rating points.
The difference might look a substantial one but that can be
reduced significantly in the Australian Open. Alcaraz did not take part in the
mega-event last year which means that this year, he will have any rating points
wiped off.
On the other hand, Djokovic won the title which would see him
lose 2,000 rating points at the start of the first Grand Slam of the year in
2024. Once that happens, the difference between the two will come down to just
290 rating points.
Alcaraz will be hoping that he will be able to recover from the recent slump in form which led to a rather disappointing end to 2023. The
current world number two lost the semifinal of the ATP Finals to Djokovic in
straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
