Carlos Alcaraz Madrid Open 2021
Carlos Alcaraz shook off a terrible result in Monte-Carlo with a solid win in Barcelona taking down Kwon 6-1 2-6 6-2.
The Spaniard entered this match very focused completely outplaying his opponent who was struggling to find a good rhythm. Alcaraz was superb from the get-go and he dominated rallies with his forehand and some nice drop shots. Kwon could not do anything and Alcaraz raced to a quick 6-1 finish in 27 minutes of play. More of that continued at the start of the 2nd set as Alcaraz took an early break in the 2nd set.
He was up 2-1 and 30-15 and at that moment he completely shut down. It's not clear what really happened but perhaps he was struggling with the wind that picked up at that moment. Kwon won 14 of 17 of the next points jumping out to a sudden lead in the 2nd set. Alcaraz completely lost focus towards the end of that set as Kwon finished it off with 6-2.
The Spaniard was smiling at the changeover aware that he messed up but not panicking as well. The reason why was clear at the start of the 3rd set when Alcaraz jumped out to another early lead. This time around he kept applying the pressure not allowing Kwon any chance of getting back into the match ultimately finishing it off with 6-2.
