Ruud Madrid 1
Casper Ruud needed a lot of time to battle past Tommy Paul and Corentin Moutet did not prove that much easier 6-1 6-2 6-7(4) 6-2.
The first two sets score-wise looked fairly convincing for Rudu but the Norwegian actually had to battle quite a bit to get it done. Moutet did lose a bunch of games but he did not surrender any game without giving a lot of resistance. 1-6 and 2-6 looks terrible on their own but there were quite a bit of positive for the lucky loser.
He used the confidence from these sets to his advantage in the end set which was competitive as well. Ruud did have a 4-2 lead and looked on the verge of completing the match but a late push by Moutet got him the break back and forced a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak Moutet actually proved better than Ruud winning it 7-4 but he expended a lot of energy in getting that done. Ruud dosed himself quite a bit which was seen in some of the loose play he had at times. He rushed and those mistakes cost him the set.
Eventually, he was able to overpower an exhausted Moutet in the final set booking the quarterfinal and proving himself much more than just another clay specialist.
