This was not expected to be a very close match but it was because the Spaniard put up a good fight for the majority of the match that went in Berrettini's favour 3-6 7-6(2) 6-3 4-6 6-2.
Matteo Berrettini had trouble controlling Fokina in this match when he didn't hit his serve as the Spaniard opted to attack whenever he saw the 2nd serve. He returned really well for the majority of the match but eventually, Berrettini was able to in a good rhythm.
Fokina won the first set and had a break in hand in the 2nd set but gave it right back to Berrettini. The Italian was lifted considerably by that rebreak and he started playing much better. It all culminated in the second set tiebreak which he won 7-2.
Berrettini kept playing well in the 3rd set and he was able to take it 6-3 behind some strong serving and a very good forehand. Fokina really did not look very confident in his game in the 3rd set but he switch things up in the next set. It proved fruitful as he jumped out to an early lead and held it for the 6-4 win. The final set opened with an early break for Berrettini.
Fokina pulled it back but surrendered his serve once more unable to keep the ball in play in crucial rallies. He would injure his knee a bit later and easily lose the final set 2-6 not being able to move the way he wanted to.
