Marin Cilic almost left a lot of Italians devasted as the Croatian served for the match against Sinner which would have sent Croatia into the semifinals but the Italian managed to come back and win.
A brilliant match was played in Turin between Jannik Sinner and Marin Cilic and it almost saw Croatia snatch the 2-0 lead over Italy which would have sent them into the Davis Cup Finals semifinals. A highly motivated Sinner came out onto the court but it was the Croatian who was playing better initially. Sinner attacked relentlessly but the Italian was not as sharp as he needed to be.
The Croatian served very well limiting the Ilitan's opportunity and that proved enough for the 6-3 opening set. The Italian crowd was not very happy and the mood turned worse when Cilic kicked off the 2nd set with a 2-0 lead. Realizing the seriousness Sinner found some life within himself and started playing a lot better. He won 9 points in a row to make it 2-2 before going up 3-3.
Cilic remained calm and won his service after which he continued applying pressure on Sinner. The Italian ultimately crumbled late at 4-4 to give the Croatian the 5-4 lead. Cilic felt some pressure as well as he committed error after error resulting in a loss of serve without winning a single point. The set was settled in the tiebreak with Sinner proving slightly better with 7-4.
The final set opened with a break by the Italian who looked primed for the win. The crowd was loving it but Cilic did not back down and pulled it right back to make it 1-1. Cilic settled in nicely after that but he ran into some trouble at 3-3 ultimately losing his serve and giving Sinner the 5-3 lead. The Italian closed it out with another break 6-3.
