Riyadh, the desert city of Saudi Arabia, became the scene of a showdown between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in a pre-season exhibition match. Both players are looking ahead to the Australian Open, which is coming up in the second half of January.
From the start, Alcaraz took an early 2-0 lead in the first set, breaking Djokovic's serve in the first game of the match. However, the world number one's response was not long in coming, quickly recovering the break and balancing the score.
The first set reached its climax when, at a crucial moment, Alcaraz double faulted his serve, giving Djokovic the opportunity to close the set with a final score of 6-4 in his favor.
From the start of the second set, Alcaraz showed that he was not willing to give Djokovic any respite, breaking the world number one's serve again in the first game. As the set progressed, Alcaraz and Djokovic held their serves. Alcaraz managed to maintain the advantage, closing the set with a solid 6-4 in his favor.
The third set started with an early exchange of breaks. Djokovic managed to take a 4-3 lead. However, the young Alcaraz responded with determination at the most crucial moment of the match.
Alcaraz leveled the score at 4-4 and that's when he turned the match around. He broke Djokovic's serve, taking a 5-4 lead. In the final game, Alcaraz deployed all his repertoire. Serving with precision, he did not allow Djokovic to regain control of the match. With an impeccable game, Alcaraz closed the set 6-4 and, with it, the whole match.
Both players have approached their preparation for the Australian Open differently. Djokovic, on his way to Melbourne, will participate in the United Cup with the Serbian team, while Alcaraz has opted not to play any tournament prior to the Australian Grand Slam.
