The Davis Cup Qualifiers took place this past week and now some players and coaches have weighed in how what they think of the weekend and Davis Cup in general.
The
Davis Cup competition is quite famous in the sense that play loves playing it but also skip it when need be. Over the years it has grown massively and more and more players take part in it. It's also a unique competition in the sense that even "lesser" tennis nations can win it like Croatia did a couple of years ago.
After this week's actions some player's and coaches weighed in on how the weekend went and gave some of their general impressions overall. Check out the list of player's and quotes below:
John Millman (AUS): "For me, I’ve said it on multiple occasions, the epitome is playing for your country, and that’s really special".
Lleyton Hewitt (AUS' captain): "This week you couldn’t win the
Davis Cup, but you could lose it". The secret to win the Davis Cup again? "Just team camaraderie, at the end of the day. Playing for the green and gold. Passion. Commitment".
Marin Cilic (CRO): “It is a privilege being part of the Davis Cup team".
Fabio Fognini (ITA): "The first goal was to qualify for Madrid. Now we are there. When you play for your flag, when you play for your country, it’s always a different feeling".
Leander Paes (IND): “I’ve had many memorable moments with the Davis Cup team. I’ve had some great partners. This was going to be my last match but the captain said something to me after the match. When it comes to representing your country, it always comes first. I will leave it up to the captain".
Jiri Vesely (CZE): "It’s been a night to remember that’s for sure, the best one in my Davis Cup career. It means so much to me".
Jan-Lennard Struff (GER): "Very happy to be part of this team… we as a team work so intense together and we had so much fun (in Madrid last year) and it was so tough that we lost in the quarter-final and we had the feeling that we can go deeper".
Marton Fucsovics (HUN): “I’m the happiest person in the world right now. This is a huge achievement for my career and for my country to get to Madrid. I can’t wait”.
Jurgen Melzer (AUT): "It's special for me because I know that being 39 years old there are not many Madrids left for me, so having qualified for this one is very special and I'm looking forward to it".
Corrado Barazzutti (ITA's captain): "The prize that I promised - to win for the people who are not here - we caught it. I’m very happy for us, for Italy".
Yuriy Schukin (KAZ's captain): "I’m happy for myself, for my team, for the federation. I just can’t wait to go out there (in the Finals) with the team and do our best".
Raúl Viver (ECU's captain): "These guys work very hard and are very committed to Davis Cup and representing their country, so I’m so happy for them. I know the effort they put into their tennis".
