Collins takes down former Olympic champion Monica Puig in Madrid

Monica Puig returned to competitive tennis for the first time in two years and the Puerto Rican put up a good effort collapsing in the 2nd 7-5 6-0.

The last competitive match that Monica Puig played happened on September 28th 2020 at the US Open. It was a defeat that ended a very rough stretch for her where she lost over 10 matches in a row. It wasn't working and she stopped. Now after all this time she returned and put up a great effort against Danielle Collins who has been superb this year.

Collins has generally been a very good clay player in her career posting a superb record not just last year but overall in her career. It was evident that she was comfortable early on in the match taking the ball early and hitting a couple of winners. She was up 4-1 but a bit of a lapse in focus gave Puig the chance to come back.

Collins served for the first set but got broken to make it 5-4 and then 5-5. She was avle to finish it off with 7-5. In the 2nd set Collins completely took over as Pugi dropped off quiet a bit. It was possibly a combination of a lack of fitness and different things. She did not serve as strongly and COllins hit a lot of return winners. It ended with a bagel 6-0.
