Carlos Alcaraz has painted a target on his back after becoming world number one believes says former number one Jimmy Connors.
Jimmy Connors is the man with the most singles titles in tennis history and he has a podcast with his son Brett Connors. They talked about Carlos Alcaraz in a recent episode of that podcast where Connors noted that he painted a target on his back after becoming world number one:
"You’ve got a bull eye on your back now, especially Alcaraz, just won the US Open and you know, the year that he’s had and he’s No. 1 in the world. (He’s) got to realize that he’s everybody’s target and you know, he’s soon (going to) have to start figuring it out. You’ve got to start winning when you’re only (at your) 70% too, or you don’t like the court surface or it is a little too slow."
Alcaraz recently experienced what that means in practice when he was stunned by a very focused and inspired David Goffin who took control of the match early and never let go of it. As Connors explained, it's very useful to learn that he wins matches even when he's not at his best.
His next event is coming next week in Basel.
