There is a chance that Nadal could overtake Carlos Alcaraz as the top player in the world and finish the season as the number one.
Nobody expected Nadal to seriously challenge for number one this year with many thinking he was closer to dropping out of the top 10. Yet, Nadal proved most wrong pretty early in the season when he shocked the world by coming back from 0-2 to beat Medvedev in the Australian Open final.
It was surprising for many reasons but mostly because the Australian Open is historically Nadal's weakest grand slam. He would add the French Open and a couple of more strong performances and all of that gives him a chance to finish the year at the top of the rankings if he plays the final stretch well. Nadal will most likely play only two events - Paris Masters and ATP Finals.
He didn't play at either event and strong runs at both could give him enough points to overtake Carlos Alcaraz who has some points to defend. Not a lot but still some points as he played both in Paris and Vienna. The difference is about 1000 points at the moment.
