Daniil Medvedev avoided disaster at the ATP Finals in Turin by coming back from a set down against Hubert Hurkacz to win the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4.
The first ATP Finals match ever in Turin was a spectacular one. It saw Hurkacz take on Daniil Medvedev with the duo playing a couple of memorable matches this year before. This time around it was a similar scenario early. Both players played well but there were no signs of nerves for Hurkacz who played superb tennis. It was some of the best tennis he played all year long. Medvedev matched his level rather well and we ended up in a tiebreak.
Hurkacz proved better early jumping out to a 6-2 lead but Medvedev was able to pull it back to 6-5. Eventually, Hurkacz won it with 7-5. It was a great set where both served amazing. Only one continued to do so in the 2nd set and it was Medvedev. Hurkacz faced some issues and Medvedev was able to break him early for a 3-0 lead. The Pole stabilized his play later on but the damage was already done.
Medvedev was starting to find ways on how to attack Hurkacz with the Pole once again experiencing difficulties in longer matches. He lost a lot of matches this year after winning the first set and some of those woes returned in this match. Medvedev returned a lot better and he was able to break Hurkacz early once again.
On his own serve, he was superb all day hitting a lot of aces and service winners. Hurkacz was barely able to put the ball back into the court and when he did he lost the point rather quickly. Medvedev continued dominating on his serve throughout the 3rd set eventually winning it with 6-4. A great match with the better player across 3 sets getting the victory in the end.
