The
Davis Cup is now entering the final phase with the
finals lineup have been completed. The team-based competition’s final-eight has
been decided after the recent fixtures. The Super-16 round of the tournament was
recently played where eight teams managed to go to the next round whereas the
other eight’s journey in their quest for the ultimate prize was ended.
The eight teams that managed to cement their spot in the final eight were defending champion Italy, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, Czechia,
Argentina and Germany. The quarterfinal lineup will see Italy taking on Austria, France taking on Belgium, Spain taking on Czechia, and Argentina taking on Germany.
Italy, being the defending champion, did not feature in the
qualifying round. Their opponent, Austria, defeated Hungary with a score of 3-2 to cement their spot in the quarterfinal. For the winning team, Jurij Rodionov secured
two wins in the singles competitions. He first defeated Fabian Marozsan with a
score of 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. Later, in the last match of the tie, Rodionov defeated Marton
Fucsovics in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. The other player to win
for Austria was Lukas Neumayer, who defeated Fucsovics on the first day with a
score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Team France will be coming into the competition after
securing a comfortable win over Croatia with a score of 3-1. For the winning
team, Corentin Moutet proved to be the real star as he clinched two wins. He first
defeated Dino Prizmic on the opening day and later got the better of Marin Cilic.
The other win for France came from Arthur Rinderknech, who defeated Cilic as
well.
France’s opponent, Belgium, was perhaps the most surprising team to appear in the quarterfinals as they defeated the 2023 season’s runner-up, Australia, with a score of 3-2. For the winning team, Raphael Collignon
was the star of the show as he won two singles contests. He first secured a
stunning win over Australia’s Alex de Minaur, whereas in the last match of the
tie, he got the better of Aleksandar Vukic. Zizou Bergs handed Belgium the
other win in the tie as he defeated Jordan Thompson in straight sets with a
score of 7-6, 6-4.
Some mouthwatering contests
Spain cemented their place in the next round after beating
Denmark with a score of 3-2. The result was a shocking one because at the end of the first day, Spain was trailing 2-0, but they managed to
turn things around completely on the second day and secured three consecutive
wins to secure their spot in the next round. Their opponent in the next round will be Czechia, who will be one of the teams to watch in the remainder of the competition, as they defeated Team USA with a score of 3-2. For the winning
team, Jiri Lehecka was the star performer as he secured two wins in the singles
category. He defeated Frances Tiafoe on the opening day in straight sets with a
score of 6-3, 6-2. On the second day, Lehecka stunned Taylor Fritz to hand his
team a massive advantage. Czechia’s other win came from Jakub Mensik, who
defeated Tiafoe in the final match of the tie in straight sets with a score of
6-1, 6-4.
Argentina, who will be taking on Germany in the last
quarterfinal of the competition, secured their spot in the next round after
beating the Netherlands with a score of 3-1. On the other hand, their opponent, Germany, secured a thumping win over Japan with a score of 4-0 in their round-of-16 tie.
The winner of the quarterfinal between Italy and Austria will face the winner of the tie between France and Belgium in the semifinal. In contrast, the winner of the Spain and Czechia quarterfinal will go up against the winner of the contest between Argentina and Germany in the last-four clash. The
final of the competition will be played in the last week of November.
