Diego Schwartzman adds his voice to the criticism against the ATP calendar after attending Indian Wells — now as a retired player. The Argentine, former world No. 8, joined the growing chorus of players like Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, who have previously voiced concerns over the demanding schedule.

According to Séptimo Game, Schwartzman spent time in Indian Wells alongside his compatriot Tomás Martín Etcheverry (No. 45), barely a month after retiring, even hitting with him during practice sessions.

“They’re not thinking about player care anymore; the calendar is a complete chaos,” the Argentine remarked. “Now you’re jumping from surface to surface, continent to continent.”

a“All because maybe there’s more money in the package, but in the end, I don’t know if that’s really the case, because the toll it takes on the players is terrible. I think that in the long run, it’ll be much harder for players to maintain a high level for an extended period. The calendar now starts in the last days of December and finishes nearly in the third week of November. And that’s not even counting the Davis Cup.”

“Tennis is practically the only sport in the world that doesn’t have holidays. And honestly, each year there are more tournaments, not fewer. That makes things very difficult. I don’t know how they’ll manage to control it moving forward.”

Schwartzman recently retired at the Argentina Open in front of his home crowd. After several injuries kept him away from competition in 2024, he managed one last victory against Nicolás Jarry in the first round before falling to Pedro Martínez in the second.
