Diego Schwartzman said a few days ago that he loves playing in Antwerp and he was not joking as he defeated the red-hot Jenson Brooksby 6-4 6-0.
Jenson Brooksby had a few very impressive wins this week at the European Open in Antwerp but today the American found his match. Diego Schwartzman has been the best performing player at the event so far and that form started back in Indian Wells. Schwartzman was striking the ball very well all week long and his return created trouble for many players.
Brooksby was no different. A lot of what the American does well starts with his serve that allows him to play aggressively. While capable on the defensive side, Brooksby plays his best when he is on the attack. The return of Schwartzman did not allow him to do so and that was trouble. After falling behind early 1-3 Brooksby did battle back for a few moments but soon thereafter Schwartzman once again took the lead.
Diego closed out the first set with 6-4 and after that, it was mostly smooth sailing for Schwartzman who completely broke down Brooksby and his play. It was very impressive to witness especially since the 2nd set was not close at all. Brooksby won 30 % of his first serves and 17 % of his 2nd serves which shows just how dominant Schwartzman was.
The 2nd set ended in a bagel 6-0 and the Argentinian will play for his 5th trophy tomorrow against Jannik Sinner. If he shows the same level as today he could very well end up being the Antwerp European Open champion. It will be his 3rd final overall. He lost both previously.
