Grigor Dimitrov completed a comeback win over Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-4 6-3 to reach the BNP Paribas Open semifinal.
Former world number 3 Grigor Dimitrov is enjoying a resurgent week at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The Bulgarian reached the 2nd week of the event with some solid wins but shined in a miraculous comeback win against Daniil Medvedev yesterday. Proving that it was not a fluke he did the same thing against Hurkacz albeit the win over Medvedev was more dramatic.
Early on in the match Hurkacz was playing stunning tennis similar to the way he can. His familiarity with the type of surface helped him early as his court coverage was great. Dimitrov was aggressive but failed to connect on many of his shots while Hurkacz dropped only 4 first serve sets. In the 2nd set, things changed is it was Dimitrov who played better early.
He took an early break but Hurkacz came back to make it 2-2 after which both settled in nicely. He did not play as sharp as earlier while Dimitrov was slowly raising his level. Dimitrov's movement became much better and Hurkacz was not able to create much separation with his serve. The Crucial game was played at 5-4 for Dimitrov were carved out a break point and converted it with the ball hitting the top of the net.
The decider was another good one where Hurkacz was the first to have break points after some mistakes by Dimitrov but the Bulgarian was able to hold. Eventually, he had break points of his own and he was able to convert it to take a 5-2 lead. At 5-3, Dimitrov served for the match but got broken with the tip of the net sending his ball wide this time losing him the game.
In the end, we ended up in a tiebreak where Dimitrov proved better. Hurkacz played a rather bad one playing without patience and committing far too many mistakes. This win was Dimitrov's 100th career win in ATP 1000 events. Congratulations.
