Ex-coach of Britain’s young tennis star Emma Raducanu has
heaped praise on the men’s world number one
Novak Djokovic.
The 36-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history
of tennis in the men’s singles category in the Open era, having won 24 Grand
Slam titles in his career. Raducanu’s ex-coach Dmitry Tursunov was recently
quoted in a report where he heaped praise on Djokovic and labelled him ‘very
serious self-discipline’.
“No matter how many contenders there are, as long as Novak
is in good shape, it will be very difficult to beat him,” he said. “After all,
in addition to his experience, he also has very good physical shape.
“If you take Rafa [Nadal] or Roger [Federer], who have
experience, but physics is no longer the same, then they could lose in this.
Novak stays on the physical level. It is very difficult to neutralise him.
“We can say that Djokovic is definitely the most motivated
of the guys. That is, [if] we can somehow determine this from the outside.
“We can’t understand, but when a person, after playing a
five-set semi-final, refuses a piece of chocolate because it contains gluten –
and he decided not to eat it – then there is a very serious self-discipline
that no one can compete with.”
Djokovic had a fabulous year at the highest level in 2023
where he ended up winning three out of four Grand Slam titles. His only defeat
in a major tournament in the recently concluded season came in the final at
Wimbledon where he lost to Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz in a
five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
Djokovic ended the season on a high as well after winning
the ATP Finals in Turin where he defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the grand
finale with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
