Novak Djokovic Australian Open 2021
Novak Djokovic got his ATP Finals campaign underway with a win over Casper Ruud that included a slow first set and a dominating 2nd one.
Casper Ruud entered his first ATP Finals match rather calm with the Norwegian showing little to no nerves. It was quite surprising considering he faced Novak Djokovic who just won a trophy in Paris. Ruud was able win his service game and even take a 2-0 lead after Djokovic slipped on break point. After that Ruud was able to hold his serve once before finally getting broken.
Djokovic took some time to get warm but once he warmed up he was starting to create a web around Ruud. The Norwegian players was able to keep himself alive for a while thanks to some stellar serving. He served two aces at 5-4 to make it 5-5 and remain the set. The first set ultimately went to the tiebreak where Djokovic gave his opponent a 3-2 lead after a bad error.
The Serbian looked quite nervous in it but so was Ruud. A couple of his errors gave Djokovic the 6-4 lead and he closed it out with 7-4. The 2nd set was a lot better by Djokovic who had also the answers for whatever Ruud tried to do. Nerves got the better of him and that impacted his serving which got worse over time.
Presented with many chances, Djokovic took a double break lead which resulted in him winning the 2nd set with 6-2. After the match, the ATP presented Djokovic with his 7th year-end no. 1 trophy.
