Daniil Medvedev has played Djokovic a few times and while defeating him at the US Open he found himself more often as the loser.
Such was the case yesterday when Medvedev found himself on the losing side again in the Paris Masters final. The Russian won the first set but Djokovic was able to turn it around and win his 37 Masters trophy overall setting a new record. After the match Medvedev praised Djokovic for everything he had done noting that his greatness will be recognized eventually:
"I have the feeling that people start more and more to respect what he has done in tennis. Because, well, he continues to beat the records."
Djokovic has not been the most popular player since arriving on the Tour and the Serbian, despite tremendous popularity around the world, still lacks the popularity that Nadal and Federer enjoy. His accomplishments often tend to get downplayed because of that. Medvedev further said:
"I think that maybe ten years after he retires, because there is going to be people who will start watching tennis who will not have seen him play. Just like me, I didn't see (Pete) Sampras play, I was too young but I heard he was amazing - it's going to be the same."
He finished off with:
"There are going to be new people coming to tennis who are just going to read in Wikipedia what were the results. Who was the world No. 1 for most weeks, for most times in the end, and they are going to see Novak everywhere. That's when people are going to start to understand, Okay, that's amazing what he has done."
