Carlos Alcaraz defeats Holger Rune by 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4, advances to 2023 Wimbledon semifinals against Daniil Medvedev
The match between the Spanish and Danish players was highly anticipated, especially since they were placed in the same section of the draw as the first seed and the sixth seed, potentially meeting in the quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz was seen as the favorite, but Rune was considered one of the few players who could surprise him. However, the former US Open champion has grown with each match and showed great motivation against Rune to reach his first Wimbledon semifinals.
The first set was closely contested, although Alcaraz posed more problems for Rune with his serve. Alcaraz had a 63% first serve accuracy, winning 80% of those points, while Rune had a 58% first serve accuracy with a 75% winning percentage. The Spaniard claimed the first set in a tie-breaker, winning 7-6(3).
The second set saw a continuation of the same gameplay as the first, with Alcaraz being nearly flawless on his serve while Rune faced more difficulties. Although Rune only conceded one break point to Alcaraz, the world No. 1 seized the opportunity to take the advantage and win the set 6-4.
With a 2-0 lead, Alcaraz didn't let up and hit 11 winners in the final set without committing any unforced errors. He capitalized on one of the two break points given by Rune, taking the lead in the fifth game of the set. Holding his serve, Alcaraz secured the victory in three sets.
Rune can still leave the All England Club with his head held high, as he matches his best Grand Slam results, having reached the quarterfinals twice in the French Open (2022 and 2023). As for Alcaraz, he will now face Russian Daniil Medvedev in his quest for a spot in another Grand Slam final. Medvedev comes off an impressive victory over Eubanks, who reached the quarterfinals and was leading 2-1 in sets against the former world No. 1.
