Daniil
Medvedev overcame a strong
Christopher Eubanks in the
Wimbledon quarterfinals
with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-1.
The Russian
didn't have an easy match against the 27-year-old American. Eubanks had been
the surprise package at the 2023 Wimbledon, defeating the 12th seed Cameron
Norrie and 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the quarterfinals, where
he faced former world No. 1
Daniil Medvedev.
In the
first set, Medvedev started strong with his serve, hitting 74% of first serves
in and winning 85% of those points. He didn't face any break points against him
and capitalized on the first break point given by Eubanks in the third game to
take a decisive lead in the set, winning it 6-4.
In the
second set, Eubanks managed to counter Medvedev's serve. Although Medvedev had
an 89% first serve success rate, he only won 50% of those points. This time,
Eubanks took advantage of two break points in the fourth and sixth games,
leveling the match with a 6-1 set win.
Eubanks
maintained his concentration and took the third set, this time by a score of
6-4, capitalizing on the only break point in the set, with both players
improving their serving. Eubanks displayed aggression, hitting 14 winners and 6
unforced errors, while Medvedev had to dial back his aggression, hitting 8
winners and only 2 unforced errors.
When things
seemed very difficult for the Russian, he brought out his best tennis and
showcased his caliber, firing 10 aces in the fourth set. Only one unforced error
compared to Eubanks' 16 helped Medvedev take the set to a tie-break, which he
won 7-6(4).
Everything
came down to the fifth set, where the nerves seemed to affect Eubanks, who lost
his first service game to love. Another break in the third game allowed
Medvedev to quickly take a 4-0 lead. In the seventh game of the match, Eubanks
again lost his serve to Medvedev, who had a declining level, especially towards
the end of the match.
In the
Wimbledon semifinals, Medvedev will face the winner of the match between world
No. 1
Carlos Alcaraz and Danish player
Holger Rune.
