Dominic Thiem keeps on winning in Gstaad as the Austrian is through to the semifinal of the ATP 250 event, his first since returning from injury.
A very welcome sight for all Thiem fans is the Austrian reaching an ATP semifinal. It seemed impossible just a few weeks ago when he was continuously losing matches he should have won. The Austrian struggled a lot since returning from injury but finally, things are looking good again. Varillas played a solid event so far but he was unable to outplay Thiem.
It was a solid match, nothing too special of fancy by Thiem but just enough to win it. The serve was largely working and it was crucial for him as he dropped only a handful of points behind it. It was even more important because Varillas was superb in attacking the 2nd serve. The Peruvian player won 24 of 30 points on Thiem's 2nd serve but was unable to use that to his advantage and win the match.
He did break Thiem two times but he allowed himself to get broken a total of five times and that's just too much to overcome. Varrilas was okay on both serves but generally, Thiem had all the responses needed to win the match. It was just a stern performance from a better player to secure the semifinal.
