One year ago Thiem was trying to get anything going in Estoril failing in the end but this time around it proved better for him as he earned himself a big win 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Thiem dropped the first set due to a very poor start that saw him play just very badly. He fell down 1-5 against a player who should not be a problem for him to beat, especially not on clay. He did pull back one break which kind of set him right however he didn't manage to use a 40-15 advantage when Ofner served for the set.
Thiem did use that very good momentum to take an early lead in the second set which he managed to hold for the rest of the set 6-3. He did continue to play well as the match went on just showing a higher level of confidence. All of his struggles were largely mental as he admitted in Miami following an early exit.
That confident display continue all through the final set which went 6-4 to him. A hugely important win for Thiem who needs wins in order to rebuild his confidence. The season shifting to clay certainly does benefit him as it's his best surface and has always been.
