Dominic Thiem stunned top seed Hubert Hurkacz who is hunting the ATP Finals with a three-set victory in Antwerp 3-6 7-6(9) 7-6(4).
This was a very interesting match between Thiem and Hurkacz and quite important for the Austrian who scored his first win over Hurkacz. Thiem was 0-3 before this match a lost a match in Metz a month ago rather easily. The Polish player looked comfortable early on in this one as well taking it 6-3.
Thiem actually played well in the opening set but he did not serve as well as Hurkacz with that being the key difference. The Austrian served much better in the next two sets and also picked his spots better ending up in a tiebreak.
He outplayed Hurkacz taking it 11-9 hit 15 winners and only four unforced errors. It was a high-quality match for both players but his serve betrayed Hurkacz as the match went on. He hit 72 % of his first serves in the opening set. He hit 60 % in the second set and only 49 % in the final one.
Despite all of that, he was able to keep it close and another tiebreak followed. Once again it was Thiem who proved better taking it 7-4. It was a superb performance as he hit 35 winners and only 13 unforced errors. He will play in the semi-final.
