As soon as the Miami Open finishes, the action completely shifts over to clay from this next week onwards with the Tiriac Open in Bucharest next on the radar. The draw is set and it takes place between 31 March - 6 April, 2025.
The Tiriac Open Bucharest is the only ATP 250 tournament ever held in Romania and is the longest running sports event in the country. Organised between 1996 to 2016 for 21 years, it was named after Ion Tiriac and Ilie Nastase. Two players regarded as the best ever from Romania.
Albeit it fell off the calendar for eight years until 2024 where it was won by Marton Fucsovics seeing off Mariano Navone. As is the case with most ATP tournaments in the weeks post Indian Wells and Miami, it doesn't include a huge field.
Especially for an ATP 250 with Sebastian Baez and Nicolas Jarry headlining this year. Both are pretty much common place on the ATP 250 clay court circuit having dominated in the case of Baez, the golden swing earlier in the year.
These tournaments which also include Marrakech and Houston are the precursor for Monte-Carlo which takes place in the week that follows before the run of Barcelona, Madrid and Rome prior to Roland Garros.
Baez starts against Gabriel Diallo or Chun Hsin Tseng. While Jarry will take on Dusan Lajovic or Christopher O'Connell. That aforementioned Fucsovics is unseeded and could face Navone in a repeat of that final early in the piece. The seventh seed faces Laslo Djere who got engaged over the weekend so is full of good news.
Flavio Cobolli faces either Botic van de Zandschulp or Richard Gasquet. While Pedro Martinez who is second seed faces Sta Wawrinka or a qualifier. Fabian Marozsan likely awaits him in the latter stages.
