Following his semifinal loss at
Roland Garros, Italian
Jannik Sinner will have to wait another year if he intends to have a shot at completing a calendar Grand Slam.
The 22-year old fell to rival
Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set match on Friday at Roland Garros. This was Sinner's first loss in a Grand Slam match during the 2024 season, as he lifted his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Had Sinner prevailed against Alcaraz, then the Italian would still have a shot at extending a unique Grand Slam streak. Over the past three seasons, the winner of the Australian Open had gone on to win the French Open, keeping their shot of winning all four Grand Slam titles in a season alive.
Serbian Novak Djokovic recorded this feat in 2021 and 2023, with Rafael Nadal accomplishing this in 2022. Each player won the first two Grand Slams of their respective seasons, and entered
Wimbledon with the chance of having all three Major titles to their name. However, with Sinner's loss, the streak has come to and end.
