Dan Evans got the first point for Great Britain in their first tie at the Davis Cup Finals against France with a solid win over Adrien Mannarino.
Great Britain gathered together a very strong squad for the Davis Cup which can't be said for France as some of their better players are not at this event. In the first match Evans faced off against Mannarino and the Brit was able to justify his mantle of favorite ahead of the match. It was a very close match as Mannarino is far from an easy out but the Brit's patience paid off in the long run.
The first set featured a great battle between the two players where Mannarino faced several issues early. Evans was able to carve out multiple break points but each time the Frenchman responded well holding his serve. The first break came at 3-3 when Evans was able to finally break through and secure a 5-3 lead. When he served for the set at 5-4 he lost his serve giving Mannarino a chance.
The Frenchman was not able to use it as he dropped his serve once more after which Evans finally secured the first set with 7-5. The 2nd set started off calmly with both players serving rather well and holding their serve. Mannarino ran into some trouble at 2-2 but held to make it 3-2. The Frenchman almost pulled away in the next game having break points but Evans remained calm.
The crucial moment came at 4-4 when Evans was able to create a break chance which he converted clinically to take a 5-4 lead. He then closed it out with 6-4 securing the first point for Great Britain.
