Nick Kyrgios reacted to a statistic about the top 50, and fans reacted due to his absence from the ATP tour this Year
Nick Kyrgios is no stranger to courting controversy both on and off the tennis court. The Australian player, known for his fiery behavior, is currently sidelined due to an injury, but that hasn't stopped him from making waves with his online comments.
In the 2022 season, he made headlines by reaching his first-ever Grand Slam final, where he faced off against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. Additionally, he reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open and the semifinals of a couple of other tournaments. Notably, he clinched the title at the Washington Open.
However, this year has been a different story. Nick Kyrgios has been grappling with injuries since the start of the season, playing only one match, which he lost. He also withdrew from all the Grand Slams of the 2023 season.
Recently, the former Wimbledon runner-up reacted to a social media post highlighting a striking gender disparity. The post pointed out that only one male player is ranked in the top 50 in both singles and doubles, while more than 10 female players meet these criteria.
Kyrgios, who currently ranks outside the top 100 in both singles and doubles, held positions of 20 and 11 in these categories respectively last season. His current ranking is world No. 135 in singles and world No. 146 in doubles.
His prowess in doubles shone through in 2022, as he clinched four titles, including his first Grand Slam doubles championship. Kyrgios kicked off the year by securing the Australian Open doubles title alongside compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Fan reactions didn't take long to arrive, expressing their disappointment with the Australian's opinion, and many criticized him.
Here are some of the reactions that Kyrgios received on his Twitter:
