The provisionally Simona Halep optimistically kept herself on the #USOpen entry list, hoping against hope, but she was removed at the deadline today when the qualifying draw was made. Taylor Townsend gets directly into the main draw in her place.
Simona Halep will not return at the US Open despite provisionally entering herself into the tournament when the initial Entry List dropped.
Halep has been wrangling since the US Open last year to prove her innocence. Since then, she has dropped out of the top 1,000 and will be without a ranking entirely as of Flushing Meadows.
Being hit with a second anti-doping charge in May, she has since spent time hitting out at the ITIA for killing her reputation. A tribunal finally happened in London recently, but the verdict has kept being delayed.
In the meantime, she entered into the US Open with a protected ranking, but with an asterisk to show she is provisionally suspended. With the Qualifying Draw happening today, she has officially dropped out.
It was mooted that with her tribunal, a two year ban would be the potential route which would then be appealed at CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). This means a long drawn out process will likely continue for Halep.
She has been replaced by Taylor Townsend in the Entry List who was the next direct entry into the main draw.
