Italy’s veteran tennis player
Fabio Fognini is set to miss
the
Australian Open for the first time in its entirety since 2006.
The 36-year-old has not featured in the final list of players
to participate in the mega-event. It will be the first time Fognini will
not feature even in the qualifying round in nearly 20 years.
Fognini did not have a great record while playing at the
Australian Open where his best outing was playing in the fourth round which he
did on four occasions. In the 2023 edition, his journey came to an end after
losing the first-round tie to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets
with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Overall in 2023, Fognini played in the main round of two
Grand Slams out of four but failed to qualify for the fourth round or beyond in
any of the mega-events.
The first Grand Slam of the year will be played from January 14 to 28 in Melbourne. This year, world number one and Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic will be defending his title once again.
The 36-year-old
secured his 10th title while playing in Melbourne in 2023 after
getting the better Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 7-6, 7-6.
