The list of people who admire Roger Federer is very long for obvious reasons and Matteo Berrettini has a good understanding of why that is.
The Italian number one has been a longtime admirer of Federer calling him the player he most enjoyed watching play while growing up. Federer has that role for many people around the world as he is simply of the best to ever play the game of tennis. In a recent interview with Gio Journal, Matteo Berrettini spoke about Federer and his importance saying:
"Federer is the most gracious player, the greatest ambassador of tennis."
Tennis has many ambassadors but the game truly exploded in popularity as Federer was slowly starting to take over the world of tennis. There is hardly any player as popular as Federer and it's quite hard to imagine a player that will be more universally beloved than Federer. The Italian agrees as he is very impressed with how Federer handles things off the court as well:
"I admire the example he sets, and the time he gives to the sport off the court and away from the cameras, whether it's charity or ATP Player's Council."
The Swiss ace is currently recovering from a knee surgery that will see him out many more months before he makes his comeback attempt. It's unclear whether Federer will ever shine on the court again, but off the court, he took time out of his schedule to fly to Boston and support Team Europe at the Laver Cup.
