Roger Federer defeated Steve Johnson in his opening match at the 2020 Australian Open in Melbourne to begin his campaign for the 21st Grand Slam title

During his 1st round appearance, fans did not enjoy much of a Roger on the court. Federer defeated Johnson 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in less than 90 minutes to reach the 2nd round at the Australian Open. He also reached his record-breaking 21st appearance in Melbourne getting away from Lleyton Hewitt with whom he was tied before.
Federer maintained the high-level of play during the whole match as he managed to win more than 80% of points after his service. In the 2nd round, the Swiss will meet the winner of the match between Halys and Krajinovic. However, he will need to wait for his opponent as the rain stopped the play in Australia.
The other players who managed to win their matches included 8th seeded Matteo Berrettini who recorded an easy 3-0 victory. He was joined by Berankis, Evans, Nishioka, and Pella. Two major surprises featured Sam Querrey defeating Borna Coric. Denis Shapovalov losing to Marton Fucsovics was a bigger surprise as the Canadian played in a good form recently.
