In the battle of long names, Felix Auger-Aliassime came back to win against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 4-6 7-6(2) 6-2.
This was a superb match contested between two players who gave it their all and neither wanted to give up. The match opened with Davidovich Fokina wasting three consecutive break points and it's something that would plague him throughout the match. After Auger saved that and won the game, the players settled into a nice rhythm and there was not much excitement until 4-4.
Fokina saved a break point at 4-4, then broke Auger in the next game and finished off the set 6-4. The Canadian took an MTO for a minor issue but continued playing. The 2nd set was a monster set. Each game featured a great battle but we did not see any breaks during the entire set. Fokina had 3 break points in two separate games but he failed to use them.
Considering how he played at that time, using them would have given him a great chance to finish off the set. The Spaniard had no issues on his serve the entire set but in the tiebreak, he fell apart. He took a 2-1 lead but then gave up 5 straight points to lose it 2-7. A lapse in focus, mistakes and the set was gone. The start of the 3rd saw players trade breaks immediately which was interesting to see considering how the 2nd set went.
Auger eventually found another break taking a 4-2 lead by exploiting Fokina's 2nd serve. The Spaniard was becoming increasingly frustrated and impatient. The Canadian remained patient and got another break finishing it off with 6-2. A great with for Felix who was close to losing this match a couple of times.
