Tennis Canada announced Wednesday that
Felix Auger-Aliassime has been named Canada's Male Tennis Player of the Year.
Felix Auger-Aliassime had a very interesting year in 2021 that started with a solid run at the Australian Open. Ahead of the clay season, he paired up with Toni Nadal that had many people excited about the upcoming swing but it largely disappointed as the Canadian failed to win consecutive matches on the surface.
Things turned quite good at Wimbledon and his play was solid during the North American stretch. It's been a positive year overall for Auger-Aliassime who broke into the top 10 for the first time this year. He stayed there only one week finishing outside of the top 10 at the end of the year but his career progressed overall. The federation also named Auger-Aliassime Most Improved Male Player of the Year and Male Singles Player of the Year.
Michael Downey, Tennis Canada chief said:
“Félix, Denis and Jaden had excellent seasons, and we are very pleased to honour them today. In the challenging conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, all three found ways to stand out and deliver exceptional performances. Félix—the first Canadian to reach the men’s semifinal of the US Open—pursued his meteoric ascent, rising to a career-high World No.10. Denis was the first player since Milos Raonic to reach for the semifinals of Wimbledon before falling to World No.1 Novak Djokovic."
