Amid all of the clamour around Jannik Sinner and Jasmine Paolini, the Italians still have one of their own to shout about in the singles. It is Lorenzo Musetti who continues his incredible form to reach the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Musetti took out the defending champion, Alexander Zverev in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 to move one away from the medal match shortly after Carlos Alcaraz plotted his path.
It took Musetti just over two hours to take down the third seed. Both sets went the distance and both lasted just over an hour each as they proved to be a duo of fine margins in favour of the Italian.
In the opening set, Zverev lost his serve immediately and Musetti was superb on his wing conceding minimal points and not giving him any break opportunities. He went 5-3 up and looked to be cruising but Zverev switched on and broke for 5-5. Only for Musetti to break straight back again and serve it out. Albeit only after nearly losing his serve again.
The second set was down to one moment as both dominated on their serve. Zverev went 5-4 up on Musetti but couldn't find the finishing touches to the set. Musetti levelled at 5-5 and broke for 6-5. Zverev had no retort on the serve of Musetti who eased to victory from there in a late hammer blow.
Now it will be Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals. The former defeated him at Wimbledon but has been troubled by the Italian on clay before. Alcaraz will face the winner of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud. They play shortly.
