France defeated Japan 2-1 in their first Davis Cup finals tie after victories of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and ATP Finals champions Herbert & Mahut.
It was a quick start for France when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed to spend only 58 minutes on the court. He defeated Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-2 and 6-1 and got France an important advantage.
However, Yoshihito Nishioka did not give up and gave Japan hopes again. From being 5-4 down in the first set, he did not lose any more games and won the set 7-5. In the second, he was already better than Monfils to win it 6-2 in just 27 minutes and so doubles needed to decide.
There, ATP Finals champions Herbert & Mahut needed to earn the second point for their country. In last 10 matches, McLachlan and Uchiyama were the first to take a set away from them. But that was not enough. Herbert & Mahut won the second set 6-4 and the third 7-5 to win the match after 2 hours and 43 minutes.
