Frances
Tiafoe defeated
Hubert Hurkacz 7-5, 6-3, increasing Team World's advantage in
the
Laver Cup.
In the
beginning of the night session, world No. 16 Hubert Hurkacz faced world No. 11
Frances Tiafoe. The Polish player had the opportunity to earn points for
Team Europe, which was trailing 6-2 with only Ruud's victory over Paul for the
Europeans.
Hurkacz suffered a disappointing early exit at the US Open,
losing in straight sets to Jack Draper in the second round. Since then, this
was the Polish player's first competition, and he faced off against the
American, Tiafoe.
With a head-to-head record of 3-2 in favor of Hurkacz, their
last encounter was at the 2022 Vienna Open, with the Polish player winning in
the first round.
Tiafoe had already made his debut the previous day in the
Laver Cup doubles alongside Tommy Paul, defeating Arthur Fils and Andrey Rublev
to secure the fourth point of the day.
The first set saw both players focused on defending their
serves, with the first break point coming in the tenth game in favor of the
Polish player. However, Tiafoe managed to defend his service game.
Nevertheless, he seized a break point in the following game and ultimately took
the set 7-5.
In the second set, Tiafoe capitalized on the momentum and
secured a break in the first game, an advantage he maintained without facing
any complications. The American was relentless with his serve and gave his
opponent no chances, ultimately winning the match 7-5, 6-3 on his first match
point.
With this result, the overall score stands at 8-2 in favor
of Team World, and the last match of the day will feature Hubert Hurkacz and
Gael Monfils facing off against the duo of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben
Shelton, to determine the final points of the day.
