David Goffin completed the comeback against Bautista Agut to win the Open Sud de France in Montpellier and after the win, he said it was special.
It was a stellar week from David Goffin who capped off a strong performance in Montpellier with a trophy. It was his first trophy in over a year and fifth overall in his career. After the match he said:
âItâs never easy to win tournaments. This is my fifth and every tournament that Iâve won was very special. I had some opportunities, Iâve had matches [where] I had zero chance to win in the final. Sometimes you take it, sometimes not. Iâve played some finals, but you need to continue, you need to improve your game, you need to fight and Iâm happy that it paid off at the end.â
Calling this final victory something special is not a surprise for Goffin who lost the opening set but came back to win the match. Speaking about what helped him do that he said:
âA final is always different. You have to just go for it. Youâve already [had] a good week and youâre playing the final. Itâs the last match of the week, so you have to give everything to try to win the trophy. Otherwise, itâs tough to win a tournament."
In the end, for Goffin, this trophy is a symbolic one as well which tells the story about his struggles last year where he played at a very low level. Now he is back to title level and he very happy about it:
"I raised my level and Iâm really happy at the end because it was a tough moment. [I had] tough weeks last season and Iâm happy that Iâm back with a level like this.â
