The 2025 Guadalajara Open Akron is the first WTA tournament that follows the US Open, slated to run from September 8-14, 2025 in Zapopan, Mexico.
A WTA 500 event, the Guadalajara Open is a hard court tournament that will feature a 28-player singles field and a 16-team doubles draw. Originally a WTA 1000 event, the tournament was downgraded to the 500 level in 2024.
Polish tennis star Magdalena Frech defeated Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki to win the title at last year's edition, claiming her maiden WTA title in the process. The Lodz native will return to defend her title, and will be joined by several talented WTA stars.
World No.11 Emma Navarro was the top seed at the event; the American has had a subpar North American hard court season. Navarro suffered an opening round loss to German Ella Seidel at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, following a third round exit at last week's Canadian Open. She has since withdrawn.

Predictions

Samuel Gill, Head Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees a resurgence awaiting.
For me it is only a few players that can win this title and they are adept to the conditions in Guadalajara. Those being Maria Sakkari who despite being nowhere near her best right now has previously won the title here and is loved by the fans in this country.
As well as Emma Navarro who won the title Merida Open Akron in Mexico. Both have not been in great form but have the skills to win in Mexico. I'd say an Anna Kalinskaya or a Leylah Fernandez too. Latter more likely. Kalinskaya still doesn't have a WTA title and seems to have skeletons in her closet when it comes to closing out big games. So while she's in form, she's only on the periphery for me.
Favourites:
*** Maria Sakkari
** Emma Navarro, Anna Kalinskaya
* Leylah Fernandez, Elise Mertens, Peyton Stearns

Field Guadalajara Open 2025

The Guadalajara field will also feature 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who is always a threat regardless of surface. Five-time Grand Slam doubles champion Elise Mertens is slated to compete as the second seed, with the Belgian posting positive results over the last month.
2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez is part of the star-studded field in Guadalajara, the World No.26 reached the final at the DC Open last month. However, the Canadian has seen a dip in form, losing in the opening round of both the Canadian Open and the subsequent Cincinnati Open.
Russians Anna Kalinskaya and Veronika Kudermetova will be competing at the event. The duo recently met in the round of 16 at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, with Kalinskaya rallying from a set down to score a 3-6 7-6(5) 6-1 victory over her compatriot.
American Peyton Stearns is also slated to participate, as well as countrywoman Alycia Parks. Greek star Maria Sakkari will be hoping to rediscover the magic that saw her lift the Guadalajara title in 2023, as the former champion is one of the names to watch out for at the event. Below is the list of entrants.
