Novak Djokovic is not the most popular tennis player in the world, especially when compared to Federer and Nadal.
Despite probably eclipsing what both have done so far in their careers Djokovic remains a figure that lacks the worldwide popularity of either Nadal and Federer. It's an interesting phenomenon and something that has deeply affected Djokovic who never quite got over it.
Toni Nadal has a theory about why Djokovic lacks popularity. He said:
"He came to the Tour when the rivalry between Federer and Rafa was already strong. It was difficult to find a spot."
It's certainly an interesting thought and one that is factually right. Djokovic did arrive at a time when tennis did not need a 3rd player as many were content with the epic rivalry between Federer and Nadal at the time. Nadal also added:
"He came to the Tour when the rivalry between Federer and Rafa was already strong. It was difficult to find a spot."
That is another thing that can be debated about but Djokovic was not as polished as either Nadal or Federer and certainly behaved a little bit differently, both on and off the court.
