Carlos Alcaraz has qualified with much suffering for the fourth round of Wimbledon after a marathon five-set duel against a great Frances Tiafoe;
The American was at a higher level than the Spaniard for much of the duel and was 2 sets to 1 up and forced the tie-break of the fourth. However, the Spaniard pulled out all the stops and in the moment of truth he played his best game to beat his rival.
After the match, he acknowledged the difficulty of facing and trying to beat Tiafoe on a court as fast as the Wimbledon Centre in statements reported by The Tennis Letter.
“Obviously it’s a big challenge playing Frances. As I said many times he’s a really talented player. Tough to face. He showed it once again that he deserves to be at the top. He deserves to fight for big things. It was really difficult for me to adapt my game and find solutions and try to put him in trouble. Happy to do it at the end of the match.”
HARD TEST.
After passing what was probably the hardest stone he had in the way, the Spaniard now has a theoretically easier draw to reach the semifinals that everyone expects and that should measure him again to Jannik Sinner. Of course, do not be confident, Wimbledon is not like the rest of Grand Slam and any player with an inspired day on the serve can send you home;
What Carlos was able to demonstrate today at the All England Club Central is that you have to kill him several times to make him lose a match. Tiafoe at times served like Federer and subtracted like Djokovic, but still could not end up beating the Spaniard. And is that the Grand Slams are something else and beat Carlitos to five sets is very complicated.
