Former
Wimbledon doubles winners Frederik Lochte Nielsen has
heaped praise on the attitude of fellow Danish player
Holger Rune.
The world number six has yet to deliver the goods in any of
the Grand Slams but has been termed by many pundits as one of the dark horses
for Wimbledon this year which will be played in London from 03-16 July.
Nielsen, who won Wimbledon’s doubles title in 2021, while
talking to
SpilXperten, stated that Rune’s attitude is refreshing and compared
him with last year’s finalist Nick Kyrgios who is also very outspoken and is
looked at as someone who is strong-headed.
"I think that Holger is really good in the media, also
in relation to how he presents himself on social media,” he said. “He comes up
with good and funny answers, and I actually think he's also good on TV.
"We know how Nick Kyrgios presents himself in various
media, and Holger has a bit of the same in him. He is not afraid to give
something of himself. He is honest, and he stands by himself to that extent. Holger
has a fresh attitude, and that also helps him to build value off the pitch, if
you have to talk about it."
Rune’s only appearance in Wimbledon was last year where he
suffered a defeat in the first round against Spain’s Marcos Giron with a score
of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite that performance, players will be uncomfortable facing the
20-year-old who has been in impressive form this year where he has won 35
matches out of the 47 played and suffered just 12 defeats in the process.
Despite his impressive run of form of late, his only ATP
seniors title remains the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters where he defeated Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic in the final with a score of 3–6, 6–3, 7–5.
