Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has taken the ATP by storm over the last two years, and the former World No.1 may have a specific goal in mind, according to retired American tennis player, Steve Johnson.

Alcaraz's ascension to the top of the tennis world has been rapid, with the 21-year old already having four Grand Slam titles to his name. The Spaniard has captured has shown little sign of slowing down, and came close to winning his maiden Olympic gold medal in Paris this year but fell to Novak Djokovic in the final.

Adding to his Grand Slam tally is Alcaraz's main goal, says Johnson

Alcaraz opted out of several ATP Masters 100 events in 2024, and Johnson believes the former World No.1's relatively light schedule was strategic.

"I feel like Carlos Alcaraz is doing his schedule strictly to win Slams,” said Johnson on an episode of the Nothing Major podcast. “He’s missing Masters series. He’s skipping Madrid or he’s not playing Montreal. I think his only goal is to win Slams. I don’t think he cares about winning the [ATP] 250 [tournaments].
“I think he’s only doing things to win Slams. He wants to get to that 20 number. That’s what it feels like because he’s missing some big events that Rafa never missed in his career.”

Alcaraz will begin his 2025 season at the Australian Open, which will run from January 12-26.
