Holger Rune is in the next round of Roland Garros (French Open) after easily cruising past a qualifier in three sets 6-4 6-1 6-3 with an impressive performance.
Rune has been playing well all clay season booking two big finals on the surface. He stood in the Monte-Carlo final against Rublev and also in the Rome final against Medvedev. Unfortunately, he lost both of them but that made him only hungrier ahead of this event. So far things have been going smoothly for him as he had a really solid draw and he'll be in the second week like last year.
The hope is to go further than last year and he might just do it being a better player overall. It was a pretty balanced performance from Rune but it wasn't a perfect one. The qualifier gave it his all and at times really troubled Rune. After all, Rune faced 8 break points and lost his serve three times.
Even so, Rune was able to create 20 break chances for himself using 8 of them to make the match rather simple. The first set saw Rune fall behind 0-2 after a shaky start but he quickly turn things around taking a 5-2 lead. He finished it off 6-4 in the end. That opening set saw him drop his serve twice so he was a bit erratic at times.
The second set was a proper beatdown as Rune took an early lead and just kept adding to it with the final score being 6-1. They traded early breaks in the 3rd set but after that Rune once again took control of the match. Just a really solid performance overall. Four aces, 35 winners and only 24 errors for the Danish star. Olivieri did well but not well enough for this level of tennis.
