Holger Rune smashes Cristian Garin in Belgrade

Holger Rune extended his good run of form on clay with a dominating win over Cristian Garin in Belgrade 6-3 6-1.

Holger Rune had a tremendous couple of days ahead of the Monte-Carlo Masters and he followed that up with a strong run in Monte-Carlo. Eventually, he got bested by Casper Ruud but it was a very competitive match where the Danish player had chances to do some major damage. After taking a few days of rest he travelled to Belgrade where he faced Chilean number one Cristian Garin.

Garin, a very strong clay player started the match off in great fashion breaking Rune in the first game. It seemed like he would be on the top of his game but it was not like that as his play deteriorated sharply after that. Garin has battled a shoulder injury earlier this year that left him playing very bad tennis for the better part of the year so far.

Today he didn't play bad but he was simply not sharp enough. He would stay in the rallies rather well but then commit mistakes or miss a forehand or backhand that went slightly wide. Rune is a superb mover on the court and it's very hard to hit through him on this surface. Today he did enough to force Garin to overhit many times during rallies hence why the quick match.

Rune won the opening set with 6-3 and then the 2nd one with 6-1 against an opponent who simply did not have his day today.
