Holger Rune smiles as he applauds the Indian Wells crowd
Holger Rune has taken a significant step in his comeback from a serious Achilles injury, defeating Quentin Halys in a dramatic three-set match to reach the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel. The Dane prevailed 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(5), securing his first ATP Tour victory since suffering the injury that sidelined him for almost a year.
The result ends a 373-day wait for a win at tour level, marking an important milestone for the former world No. 4 as he attempts to regain his place among the leading players on the ATP Tour. Although Rune had already returned to competitive action and collected victories in the Davis Cup, Basel represents his first success on the main tour since his long absence.
Rune ruptured his Achilles tendon during his Stockholm Open semifinal against Ugo Humbert in October 2025. The injury required surgery and brought his season to an abrupt end, leaving him facing a lengthy rehabilitation process before he could consider returning to competition. His recovery kept him away from the ATP Tour for nearly 11 months.
The 23-year-old returned to competition in September 2026, representing Denmark in the Davis Cup. He recorded victories over Iliyan Radulov and former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov as Denmark faced Bulgaria, offering encouraging signs ahead of his return to the tour. However, his first ATP appearances back proved more difficult, with defeats in Tokyo and Shanghai preceding his breakthrough against Halys in Basel.

Rune overcomes difficult comeback start to win in Basel

Rune's return to the ATP Tour initially brought two consecutive defeats. He lost to Kyrian Jacquet in the first round in Tokyo, going down 6-3, 6-1, before showing greater resistance against Daniel Altmaier in Shanghai. The Dane took the opening set 6-1 but ultimately lost 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 after Altmaier fought back to claim the match.
Against Halys, Rune finally converted his competitive progress into a tour-level victory. The opening set went his way 6-4, but the Frenchman responded by taking the second-set tiebreak 7-2 to force a deciding set. Neither player managed to establish a decisive advantage in the final set, sending the match into another tiebreak to determine the winner.
The deciding tiebreak looked to be under Rune's control when he opened up a 5-1 lead. Halys refused to go quietly, however, winning four consecutive points to draw level at 5-5 and put the Dane under renewed pressure. Rune responded by taking the next two points, sealing the match and ending his wait for an ATP Tour win.
The victory could provide a valuable confidence boost as Rune continues to rebuild his match fitness and competitive rhythm. Returning from an Achilles rupture presents a significant physical and mental challenge, and a tight three-set contest offers a more demanding test than a straightforward win. The Dane will now look to build on the result rather than treat it as the end of his comeback process.

Basel offers Rune a chance to build momentum

Basel is a familiar setting for Rune, who has enjoyed considerable success at the tournament in previous years. He has won 11 of his 14 matches at the Swiss Indoors and reached at least the semifinals in each of his three previous appearances from 2022 to 2024. His strongest run came in 2022, when he reached the final before losing to Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-5.
That history gives Rune a positive backdrop as he looks to string together victories following his return. His immediate priority, however, will be to maintain the level he showed against Halys and continue adapting to the demands of tour-level tennis after such a long absence.
Rune will next face either 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz or Zizou Bergs in the second round. Both potential opponents would present a different challenge, and the match will offer another indication of where the Dane stands as he works his way back toward his previous level.
His two ATP Tour defeats following his return came in Tokyo and Shanghai, while his Davis Cup victories over Radulov and Dimitrov had already given him wins in competitive matches. The Basel result is therefore a crucial milestone: Rune has now won again on the ATP Tour, and he will hope to use that breakthrough as a foundation for the next stage of his comeback.
