There were heartbreaking scenes at the
Stockholm Open as
Holger Rune was forced to retire in tears and couldn't leave the court without being assisted after leading by one set in his semi-final against Ugo Humbert.
He was leading by one set against Humbert 6-4, 2-2 when he was no longer able to continue. After a lateral movement, Rune felt something in his foot and immediately stopped. He was left with a towel draped over his face with the crowd concerned including his mother Aneke as the doctor and physio were sat by his side.
The 22-year-old shook hands with his opponent before leaving the court on one leg. Ugo Humbert of course benefits from this as he reaches a second final of the year. He had claimed an early break in the first set before Rune fought back to take the lead only to be halted by injury. He will now face off against Denis Shapovalov or Casper Ruud next.
This after he saw off Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini in the rounds prior to reach this point but for Rune who was due to play Swiss Indoors next week, he now has a stint on the sidelines likely.
“It’s not the way I wanted to win. I just hope he’s okay,” said Humbert after the match. “There’s not much more to say. He was playing better than me, but that’s all I can say for now.”
