Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal played his last professional match at the 2024 Davis Cup in Malaga, and the former World No.1 received thousands of well-wishes from his fans and fellow tennis players.
Representing Spain at the international competition, Nadal faced off against Netherland's Botic van de Zandschulp in one of the two singles matches. Despite his best efforts and the partisan crowd in support, Nadal was unable to best his opponent. The Dutchman prevailed in straight sets, as Netherlands would go on to win the tie, sending Nadal into retirement.

Williams pays tribute in heartwarming video

Following the tie, Nadal received a standing ovation from the crowd, composed of both Spanish and Dutch supporters. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was presented with a video tribute that included several of his peers, including long-time rivals Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Additionally, WTA great Serena Williams had some nice words for the Spaniard.
"Rafael Nadal, oh my god those two names are just such names of legends, inspiration, and so much power," began Williams. "I've always admired Rafa and loved what he has done since he first came on the scene with those incredibly long shorts which I thought was so cool and so stylish.
"Obviously, I loved the fashion, his power and his arms. I loved the strength he had in his arms. I was like, 'Wow that's so cool and inspiring.' Talk about fitness. I just think he is one of the most amazing, most iconic tennis players to ever, ever be seen.
Furthermore, Williams stated she was inspired by Nadal's unique style of play, to the extent that she tried to incorporate several facets of his gameplay into her game.
"To play in the same breath, in the same stage, in the same time as Rafa was obviously very inspiring to me," added the 23-time Grand Slam champion. "And I would also look at his matches and be like I want to move like that, I want to play like that and I didn't always do it but I definitely tried. He was someone that I would study his film and say, 'how can I be like Rafa?' So many people always wanted to figure out how they can be Rafa and no one could."
